Why People Confuse Them

Both strategies are excellent at adapting, and both want to be accepted by others. Both can struggle to know who they are and what they themselves want, even though with the Three it doesn't show. On top of that, the Three moves towards the Nine under pressure: they become passive and lose motivation.

What the Difference Is

The Three is driven by their own engine. They throw themselves into projects confident they'll succeed, and they find it hard to slow down. The Nine can be very successful, but often has someone around who keeps them on track towards their goals. Doing something good for themselves is hard for them, but they're much better at resting.

The Three seeks the attention of people they consider important. The Nine is reluctant to ask for attention and easily fades into the background. Projects excite the Three; free time and comfort excite the Nine.

Subtypes: The Nine most often confused with the Three is the social Nine, who works hard and doesn't show fatigue, but doesn't want to be the centre of attention and isn't doing it for image.

Three Questions That Settle It

Answer honestly, based on how things usually are, not how you'd like them to be.

  1. How do you feel when you have a whole day off?

3More likely a Three if you soon get restless and look for something to do.

9More likely a Nine if you enjoy it and don't feel anything is missing.

  2. What drives you towards your goals?

3More likely a Three if it's mainly you; you like having a clear goal.

9More likely a Nine if it's often someone else who encourages you and reminds you.

  3. How do you feel about attention from others?

3More likely a Three if you want it and know how to win it.

9More likely a Nine if you tend to avoid it and leave the spotlight to others.
