Why People Confuse Them

This mix-up is made almost exclusively by Threes. Smart Threes, especially those from families that valued intelligence and originality, like to see themselves as thinkers. Since the Five is known as the thoughtful one, they pick it. A Five only rarely mistakes themselves for a Three.

What the Difference Is

The Five is interested in knowledge for its own sake. They dive into an idea because of the idea itself and don't need anything to come of it. They don't seek fame or money for their discoveries and tend to keep quiet about their work. They can stick with a subject for years. The Three thinks with a goal in mind: to impress, to be the best in the field, to win an award. When success doesn't come, they switch interests and even fields.

The Three is sociable, well put together, and knows exactly how they come across. The Five tends to be solitary and doesn't care much about appearance. The Three worries a lot about what others think of them. The Five barely cares about other people's opinions and is happy to come across as eccentric.

Three Questions That Settle It

Answer honestly, based on how things usually are, not how you'd like them to be.

  1. Why do you go deep into something?

3More likely a Three if you want to be good at it and want others to see it.

5More likely a Five if it simply interests you, even if you never showed it to anyone.

  2. Do you like talking about your achievements?

3More likely a Three if you do and enjoy showing them off.

5More likely a Five if you'd rather keep them to yourself.

  3. How much do you think about how you come across?

3More likely a Three if a lot, and you know how to present yourself.

5More likely a Five if not much, and you care more about what you're working on.
