Carries suffering quietly and doesn't show it. Perseveres, endures a lot, sets strict standards for themselves, and does more than they talk about feelings. At first glance, they may not look like a typical Individualist.
At first glance, self-preservation Fours don't look like a typical Four at all. This is what's known as a countertype: a subtype that goes against the main passion of its strategy, which makes it easy to overlook. They don't show their suffering, don't complain, and don't dramatize. Quite the opposite: they endure a lot, are hard on themselves, and do more than they talk about feelings.
They feel the sense that something is missing just as strongly as other Fours, but they carry it inside. Their envy isn't visible because they turn it into effort: they work hard to get what others have and they lack. But whatever they gain, it's never enough. They have high standards for themselves and feel they have to earn everything. Secretly, they hope someone will notice their endurance and sacrifices and appreciate them. They often throw themselves into demanding tasks to prove they can take it. They have a lot of courage, empathy, and a feel for people who are suffering.

How to tell it from the others
They differ from the social Four in that they don't share their suffering, they carry it. The social Four talks openly about feelings; the self-preservation Four keeps them inside. They differ from the one-to-one Four in that they don't turn their pain against others, but bear it within themselves.

What the self-preservation instinct is
Attention automatically turns to safety and security: health, money, home, food, comfort, and reserves. People with this instinct in first place tend to be practical and reliable and think ahead about what they'll need. Under stress, they retreat into their home base.
