Subtypes · Strategy 2 Caring Altruist

2Charming

Self-preservation Two. A playful, endearing helper who secretly longs for someone to take care of them.

Charming

They win people over with playfulness and cuteness rather than grand gestures. They trust others less. They help, but secretly long for the care to come back to them too. They tend to have a sense of humor and come across as youthful.

Self-preservation Twos win people over with charm rather than grand gestures. They tend to be playful, funny, youthful and a little defenseless. Others naturally feel like looking after them, and they know how to accept it.

They're the countertype of the Twos, which is why they often don't look like a Two. Unlike the other Twos, they're more timid, trust others less, and have an ambivalent relationship to closeness: people attract them, but at the same time they fear rejection, criticism, or losing themselves in the other person. So they keep up an invisible wall. They enjoy helping, but they also carry a need to be cared for, protected and put first. Admitting this is hard for them, because for a Two, needing something just for yourself is almost forbidden.

How to tell it from the others

They differ from the social Two in that they don't crave influence and standing in the group, but a special place with specific people. They differ from the one-to-one Two in their caution: the one-to-one Two goes after a person wholeheartedly, while the self-preservation Two waits to be noticed.

What the self-preservation instinct is

Attention automatically turns to safety and security: health, money, home, food, comfort, and reserves. People with this instinct in first place tend to be practical and reliable and think ahead about what they'll need. Under stress, they retreat into their home base.
