The Big Bang Theory is a show about a group of scientists who understand the universe but not people so much. That's exactly what makes it great for the Enneagram. Each character copes with life in their own way, and once you know their strategy, you'll understand why Sheldon and Leonard argue about the thermostat and why Penny sticks with them anyway.
Typing characters is always a bit of a guess, because the characters were written by screenwriters, not by the Enneagram. Enneagram fans disagree about some of them. Here's our take on the show's main characters.
3 · StrategistHoward
Howard wants to be taken seriously: he's a NASA engineer who becomes an astronaut, and then brings it up at every opportunity. Behind his jokes is a drive to succeed and be admired. A classic Strategist: performance, image, and the need to prove he's got what it takes. As he matures, his better side shows too: he can work hard and take care of his family. Strategist profile
4 · IndividualistRaj
Raj is a romantic who longs for great love and feels everything to the fullest. He feels different from everyone else and that no one fully understands him. He loves beautiful things, art, and dramatic gestures. That's the Individualist: depth, sensitivity, and longing for what's missing. Individualist profile
5 · ExpertSheldon
Sheldon lives in his head. He understands theoretical physics but not people, and he'd prefer to keep the world under control through knowledge and fixed rituals. That's the Expert: the need to understand things, to protect his space and energy, and to face as few unpredictable demands from others as possible. His roommate agreement and “his spot” on the couch aren't about morals; they're about security and predictability. His Traditionalist wing makes him someone who needs rules and routine. Expert profile
Amy: Expert (5w4)
Amy is a neurobiologist who studies the world the same way she runs her experiments: attentively, from a distance, and eager to understand it in depth. For a long time she lived mostly in her head, and relationships were more of an interesting research problem to her. That's the Expert. Her Individualist wing adds what sets her apart from Sheldon: a longing for closeness, romantic dreams, and the sense that she's different from everyone else and no one fully understands her. That's why she and Sheldon work: they both live in their heads, Amy just opens her heart sooner. Some fans see a Perfectionist in her because of her principles and her contract with Sheldon, but she's most often typed as a Five with a 4 wing. Expert profile
6 · TraditionalistLeonard
Leonard is the one who holds the group together. He's loyal, responsible, and tries to keep everything running smoothly. At the same time, he's constantly worrying, doubting himself, and needing reassurance, especially in his relationship with Penny. A textbook Traditionalist: dependable, but with a head full of scenarios of what could go wrong. Traditionalist profile
7 · OptimistPenny
Penny brings life, fun, and a glass of wine into an apartment full of scientists. She lives in the present, loves experiences, and avoids what hurts, like serious conversations about the future. That's the Optimist. And as with every Optimist: once she stops fearing commitment, it becomes clear how strong and dependable she can be. Optimist profile
8 · LeaderBernadette
Tiny, with a soft little voice, and yet the toughest person in the group. Bernadette gets straight to the point, isn't afraid of conflict, and keeps things under control, at work and at home. That's the Leader: strength, directness, and protecting her own. Her character is a good example that a Leader doesn't have to look like a boss from the movies. Leader profile
9 · MediatorStuart
The comic book store owner who lets himself be pushed to the sidelines and doesn't want to be a burden to anyone. Stuart adapts, doesn't argue, and keeps his wishes to himself. That's why the others often overlook him. The Mediator in his less fortunate form: peace at the cost of not fully living his own life. Once he finds his place, it shows how kind and accommodating he can be. Mediator profile
Who's missing from the group
Among the main characters, you won't find an Altruist or a Perfectionist. So there's no one who looks after the others, and no one who keeps an eye on what's right. Maybe that's partly why everyone is mostly busy with themselves and the group makes up its own rules, usually Sheldon. The role of the caregiver who cooks and makes sure everyone eats belongs to Howard's mom, whom we almost only ever hear.
Why they stick together
The Big Bang Theory shows nicely how strategies complement each other. Sheldon needs his order and Leonard patiently puts up with it. Penny brings lightness to a world where everything gets calculated. Bernadette makes the call when the others can't agree. And Amy and Sheldon show that even two people who live by rules and in their heads can learn to live from the heart too.
