Strategy 9
Calm Mediator
- Desire
- Inner peace and harmony
- Fear
- Conflict, separation, and loss of connection
How they're connected
They're neighbouring strategies, so each can be the other's wing. They have a lot in common and often understand each other without explanation.
Both strategies belong to the same centre (body centre), so they deal with a similar theme, each in its own way.
What draws them together
The stereotype says: a dynamic Eight and a compliant partner. The reality is different. Both agree that the Eight is the forceful one and the Nine rarely says no. But the question "who's in charge?" draws awkward smiles. What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? Both sides have to give way.
The couple marvels that the other's very different style works. The Eight pushes through obstacles; the Nine forgets. For the Eight, learning to give way is a revelation; for the Nine, it's discovering that anger can have a good effect too. The Eight brings excitement; the Nine, like a mountain, weathers the storms.
Where they click
- The Eight brings strength and excitement, the Nine brings calm and stability.
- The Nine soothes the Eight's temper.
- The Eight helps the Nine take action.

Where the friction is
- The Eight dominates, the Nine gives way.
- The Nine withdraws, the Eight pushes.
- Comfort can lead to inertia, where nobody does anything.

Working together
Collaboration either moves ahead quickly or turns into a test of strength. Both are "anger" strategies: the Eight gets angry easily and directly, the Nine indirectly, through passive resistance. Together they're a strong pair: the Eight acts and resolves conflicts, the Nine mediates and supports.

The two of you, specifically
This is only a general description of the Eight and Nine pairing. The Couples Guide goes deeper: you both take the Quick Test, and the guide works with your subtypes. The self-preservation, social, and one-to-one versions of the same strategy behave completely differently in a relationship.
