How they're connected
They're neighboring strategies, so each can be the other's wing. They have a lot in common and often understand each other without explanation.
What draws them together
Both the Four and the Five tend to withdraw into an inner world, but each into a different one. The Five lives in abstraction and ideas that seem free of emotion. The Four tracks every shift in mood. Heart and mind are such different instruments that they can feel misunderstood: the Four thinks "my partner has no heart," the Five thinks "my love exists only in my head."
Even so, they share a view of the world as full of meaning and symbols. Both feel that real life happens beneath the surface of everyday events. Over time, they tune in to each other's tastes and express their feelings through the way they live. Choosing colors for the garden means "we'll sit together in that garden when it blooms." A cup of tea poured in the morning is a declaration of love.
Where they click
- Deep conversations and shared interests.
- Respect for privacy and for being different.
- Both are original and unconventional.

Where the friction is
- The Four wants a lot of attention; the Five conserves energy and guards their time.
- The Five finds the Four's emotions overwhelming.
- The Four finds the Five cold and unreachable.

Working together
The Five can be far more expressive at work than at home. When a project excites them, it shows. As a boss, the Five works within the boundaries of a firm agenda, and the Four can run the office their own way, with style and a personal touch. The Five is happy to leave the company's public image to them.

The two of you, specifically
This is only a general description of the Four and Five pairing. The Couples Guide goes deeper: you both take the Quick Test, and the guide works with your subtypes. The self-preservation, social, and one-to-one versions of the same strategy behave completely differently in a relationship.
