Strategy 1
Principled Perfectionist
- Desire
- Goodness, integrity and being at peace with yourself
- Fear
- Making a mistake, failing and being bad inside
Why People Confuse Them
Both strategies have a strong will, like to take action and are clear about how things should be done. Both stand up for justice and know how to lead change. Ones sometimes think they're Eights because they notice their own anger and long for the influence Eights have.
What the Difference Is
The One persuades: they want people to do what's right and try to convince them logically. When they meet resistance, they get angry and lose patience. The Eight relies on self-confidence and force of personality. They don't need to know whether it's right; it's enough that it's their way. The One wants to win others over to their truth; the Eight simply pushes through them.
For the One, justice is a principle they think about, and when they act against it, they feel guilty. For the Eight, justice is a matter of instinct: when they see someone strong hurting someone weaker, they step in without thinking. They mainly defend their own people and address imbalances of power. The One also has to justify even a tough approach to themselves; the Eight doesn't need to.
Subtypes: The one-to-one One, who goes after what they want with passion, can be confused with the self-preservation Eight; but the One follows social rules, while the Eight makes their own.
Three Questions That Settle It
Answer honestly, based on how things usually are, not how you'd like them to be.
- How do you push your opinion when someone disagrees with it?
1More likely a One if you argue what's right and it frustrates you that the other person doesn't get it.
8More likely an Eight if you push harder and make it clear you won't back down.
- What does injustice bring out in you?
1More likely a One if you think about which rule should put it right.
8More likely an Eight if you step in immediately, especially when it involves your people.
- How do you feel when you act tough?
1More likely a One if you need to justify it and feel guilty if it wasn't fair.
8More likely an Eight if it feels normal to you and you don't need to defend it.
