Why People Confuse Them
Both strategies like to withdraw, come across as unconventional, and are often creative. The easiest mix-up is between Fours with a Five wing and Fives with a Four wing. Fives also fairly often think they're Fours, because they discover they feel deeply, and according to the simplified descriptions, a Five shouldn't feel.
What the Difference Is
The Four lives in their feelings and needs others to respond to them. They show their moods, seek deep connection with people, and are sensitive to rejection or loss. When something is missing, it hurts, and they dwell on it for a long time.
The Five has feelings too, but processes them with their head first and shares them with very few people. They protect their time, energy, and privacy, because they fear other people's demands will drain them. When something is missing, they disconnect from it and start conserving. The difference shows in creative work too: the Four draws on their own story and relationships, while the Five tends to show how they see the world and experiments more.
Under pressure, the Four dives into emotions and looks for someone who understands them. The Five withdraws to sort out their thoughts in peace.
Subtypes: The Five most reminiscent of the Four is the one-to-one Five, who longs for an intense connection with one person, while otherwise remaining a typical Five.
Three Questions That Settle It
Answer honestly, based on how things usually are, not how you'd like them to be.
- When something hurts you, what do you do first?
4More likely a Four if you stay in the feeling for a long time and want to share it with someone.
5More likely a Five if you cut yourself off from the feeling and start analyzing the situation.
- What drains you more in relationships?
4More likely a Four if distance and superficiality bother you.
5More likely a Five if other people's demands and expectations wear you out.
- What is your creative work or your interests about?
4More likely a Four if you express your own experiences and your story.
5More likely a Five if you explore how things work and look for your own view of the world.
