Why People Confuse Them

Both strategies are emotional and feel the ups and downs of relationships intensely. Twos sometimes think they're Fours after a breakup or during a sad period, because they've heard that Fours tend to be melancholic and romantic. But sadness on its own says nothing about your strategy.

What the Difference Is

The Two goes toward people and gets involved, sometimes too much. The Four tends to pull back and hope others will seek them out. The Two looks for someone to rescue. The Four looks for someone to rescue them.

The Two reads other people's feelings well but often doesn't see their own needs and motives. The Four, by contrast, is very tuned in to their own feelings but may miss how they come across to others. The Two hides their needs behind caring for others; the Four shows them and expects others to understand.

Subtypes: The self-preservation Two, who is more sensitive and longs for love, is most often confused with the Four, and the one-to-one Two can be confused with the one-to-one Four.

Three Questions That Settle It

Answer honestly, based on how things usually are, not how you'd like them to be.

  1. When you're sad, what do you do?

2More likely a Two if you throw yourself into taking care of someone else.

4More likely a Four if you withdraw and need to fully feel your sadness.

  2. What do you perceive most sharply?

2More likely a Two if it's mainly how the people around you feel.

4More likely a Four if it's mainly what's happening inside you.

  3. What do you want most in a relationship?

2More likely a Two if you want to be important to and needed by the other person.

4More likely a Four if you want the other person to finally truly see and understand you.
